Tutor : Laurent Guillot
City : Normandie
No woodworking machine or other sophisticated machinery is necessary for getting to know the basics of carpentry. All you need is an axe, some hand tools (an adze, a mortise chisel and others) and in the course of 3 or 5 days (see timetable) you can build your hut, a hen house or even a shed for your compost toilet. Laurent will help you rediscover the basic techniques, but he’ll also give instructions in the use of a woodworking machine to those who wish it. This workshop provides an essential step towards successfully carrying out your first projects or preparing a personal building plan.
- The tools: Learning their range of utility, and how to use them in complete safety.
- Splitting the wood – using raw greenwood – into different sections on the site where the trunks have been felled.
- Designing and constructing – on site – a small hut (garden shed, small shelter for farm animals …) using the following steps:
- Drawing up a plan
- Detailed draft of the final plan, lining up and marking the wood
- Cutting the wood to size. Preference is given to the use of hand tools. Learning the basic techniques: tenon and mortise joints, peg hole assembly …
- Trial set-up
- Final assembly of hut on site.
